Louis van Gaal has added Martijn Reuser to his coaching staff for the World Cup in Qatar. After Danny Blind and Edgar Davids, the former midfielder of Ajax will be Van Gaal’s third assistant at the end of this year in Qatar. Reuser has been active at the KNVB since 2014 as a coach of various youth teams and is known as a great coaching talent. Van Gaal remembers the former Ajax player from his time as a trainer in Amsterdam, where they won the Champions League together in 1995.

Reuser was assistant coach of the Netherlands Under 16 last season and was in charge of the Netherlands Under 18. The one-time international is seen as a great coaching talent and is rewarded by Van Gaal for his performance and potential. Reuser will take charge of the Under 19 of the Netherlands next season and is preparing for that position with a role in the staff of coach Bert Klonterman by attending the European Championship qualifiers against Serbia, Norway and Ukraine in June. The Dutch national team will play against Belgium (away), Wales (away), Poland (home) and again Wales (home) in June as part of the Nations League.

More than two weeks ago, the national coach announced that he would also add Davids to his staff for the World Cup. At the time, Van Gaal was pleased with the arrival of Davids, who succeeded Henk Fraser as assistant. “After it was clear that Henk Fraser will focus entirely on FC Utrecht from next season, I asked Edgar if he wanted to become my second assistant at the the Dutch squad. Our paths have crossed regularly in the past and I am convinced that he will fill this role in an excellent way. The players can take full advantage of his experience as an international at, among other things, four international final tournaments,” said Van Gaal.

Reuser played as a football player for Ajax, Vitesse, Ipswich Town, Willem II, RKC Waalwijk and NAC Breda. In Amsterdam he had great successes by winning the Champions League and World Cup in 1995 under the leadership of Van Gaal. As a trainer, Reuser worked as an assistant at NAC Under 19 and ADO Den Haag Under 17. Since 2014, Reuser has held several positions within the KNVB with the national youth teams.
