Jong Oranje coach Erwin van de Looi once again discussed the situation of Myron Boadu, whom he left out of his selection for this international match. The AS Monaco striker has not been called up by the trainer because of his ‘attitude and ambition’, it was reported in the press release when the selection was announced. Van de Looi will start on Wednesday The Telegraph elaborates more extensively on his choice not to call up the twenty-year-old attacker.

Boadu received strong criticism from the trainer in the previous international match. In the media, Van de Looi spoke negatively about the player who remained on the bench for ninety minutes against Wales (5-0 win). He was informed by telephone from Van de Looi that he was excluded from the selection of the Dutch Juniors for the matches against Bulgaria (Friday) and Gibraltar (Monday). The trainer does not want to reveal anything to the newspaper about the content of the conversation. “That is confidential, something between player and trainer,” says Van de Looi.

Despite the fact that Boadu was told in the telephone conversation why he was left out, Van de Looi criticized him in a press release from the KNVB. “Myron is a player with a lot of talent and quality and has also proven his value for the Dutch Juniors several times. We do expect a player who is called up for the Dutch Juniors to have a certain attitude and ambition, we have missed this at Myron in the past two international matches. That is why we are now making different choices,” said Van de Looi in the press release. Boadu does not want to respond to the newspaper about this. His supervisor José Fortes Rodriguez does not think the ‘public insult’ is chic. “That’s not my way, so I’m not going to do the same.”

“We didn’t want to suggest that we don’t think he’s good enough. That is why we have stated the reason,” said Van de Looi in Zeist on Friday. He emphasizes that not calling Boadu did not happen overnight. Around the home match against Moldova (3-0) the trainer was already unhappy about Boadu’s attitude. “We gave him feedback on that and discussed it with each other. Well, then you see how he comes in in October and what happens,” said Van de Looi, who now prefers Joshua Zirkzee (Anderlecht) and Brian Brobbey (RB Leipzig).

Van de Looi says he has given Boadu the opportunity a few times to show what he has to bring. “You talk to Myron about things and want to see a reaction. Well, we didn’t see that reaction during raids and training. Then you make different choices for once,” says Van de Looi, who indicates that the Jong Oranje is not a closed book for Boadu. “We shouldn’t make it bigger than it is, it’s nothing personal either. Next time we won’t play until March. Myron has plenty of time to show what he can do at Monaco and get back to playing football. I really hope this will work. I told him that too. He can be an important player for us. But not the way it went.”
