NEC has the first points of the season. Rogier Meijer’s team, where Jasper Cillessen was under the bar for the first time in eleven years, was a size too big for FC Volendam: 1-4. With the opening goal of the home team, top asset Cillessen and did not look good, but thanks to hits from Elayis Tavsan, Oussama Tannane, Mikkel Duelund and Jordy Bruijn, the Nijmegen team won in the second half.
Cillessen was immediately assigned a basic place at NEC. This was at the expense of Mattijs Branderhorst. It was the first time since August 21, 2011 for the Groesbekenaar that he defended the Nijmegen goal. Cillessen did not enjoy his debut much, because after eleven minutes he was passed. Volendam striker Daryl van Mieghem took a pass from behind perfectly and misdirected Cillessen who had come out of his goal: 1-0. The goalkeeper seemed upset for a short time, as he tapped an apparently easy shot over the bar three minutes later. Tavsan then brought relief to NEC and Cillessen, by scoring the 1-1 by placing the ball in the far corner.

After twenty minutes it was newcomer and tastemaker Tannane who gave NEC the lead. The technician signed for his first Nijmegen goal via the inside of the far post. The bad luck did not last for Volendam after that, as Francesco Antonucci suffered a groin injury and was forced to be replaced by Ibrahim El Kadiri. Nevertheless, the team of trainer Wim Jonk set up and let the NEC escape. Robert Mühren beat Cillessen on the stroke of half-time, but his header exploded on the crossbar.

After tea, Volendam claimed a penalty. After sloppy defense of NEC, substitute El Kadir entered the penalty area of the Nijmegen team. However, he lost control of the ball and fell to the ground along Cillessen’s legs. After the VAR had looked at the situation, it turned out that there was no question of a penalty kick. Volendam kept the pressure on NEC to force the equalizer, but this did not lead to great opportunities. Fifteen minutes before the end, Mikkel Duelund closed the game. Lasse Schöne provided a measured pass and Duelund’s header was too powerful for Volendam goalkeeper Filip Stankovic. The 1-4 just before time came in the name of Bruijn, who rounded off with a neat marker.
