The Champions League match between Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday evening is led by Danny Makkelie, UEFA announced on Monday afternoon. Pol van Boekel is the video referee, with Dennis Higler as his assistant. It will be Makkelie’s fifth Champions League match this season.

The forty-year-old referee previously whistled the matches Bayern Munich – Barcelona (2-0), Chelsea – AC Milan (3-0), Atlético Madrid – Club Brugge (0-0) and Tottenham Hotspur – Sporting Portugal (1-1). Makkelie has refereed forty Champions League matches in his career so far. In it he drew a yellow card 149 times, gave one red card and put the ball on the spot twelve times.

Chelsea and Dortmund face each other in London on Tuesday evening. In the first leg, the Germans won 1-0 through a goal from Karim Adeyemi. The 21-year-old striker will be missing from Stamford Bridge due to a muscle tear. Donyell Malen returns to the match selection after an ankle injury. Dortmund won 2-1 at home against RB Leipzig last Friday. Marco Reus and Emre Can scored on behalf the Borusesafter which Emil Forsberg returned something for Leipzig.

Chelsea won a game for the first time since January 15 last weekend. Graham Potter’s formation finally showed some of its class again, although opponent Leeds United was narrowly defeated: 1-0. However, it is not yet time for garlands: Chelsea is still in tenth place in the Premier League. Wesley Fofana’s goal was only the fifth (!) Chelsea goal of 2023.
