Chelsea and Manchester City are currently hesitant about participating in the Super League, so know the Guardian on the basis of a board member of a club who has been approached to also participate in the new competition. The two English clubs would consider withdrawing from the Super League after all the negative reactions from the supporters and the harsh words of UEFA and the Premier League.

Manchester City and Chelsea’s doubts about the Super League buzzed in the corridors of the UEFA congress in Montreux on Tuesday. The opponents of the new European competition report that less than half of the twelve founding clubs can be counted among the fanatics, who want to create a Super League at all costs. Juventus, Real Madrid, Manchester United and Liverpool are among the initiators of the competition and the other clubs would mainly want to participate in order to improve financially and not be left out.

The reporting of the Guardian is partially endorsed by Sky Sports and Alex Wickham, reporter for POLITICO London. Wickham writes on Twitter that one English club is ‘seriously considering’ leaving the Super League. This club would believe that Liverpool and Manchester United – according to Wickham the English leaders of the Super League – have lied to the other English clubs. The BBC reports, however, that the six English clubs would still be behind the plan, because they believe that the Super League will bring major financial benefits.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino and his colleague Aleksander Ceferin again spoke out harshly against the Super League at the UEFA congress on Tuesday. Still, according to various media outlets – including ESPN – do not intend to take any measures now, which means that the semi-finals of the Champions League will ‘continue’ next week. UEFA board member Jesper Möller said on Monday that Chelsea, Manchester City and Real Madrid will be immediately expelled from the Champions League because of their participation in the Super League. Meanwhile, England’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson is said to be exploring options for tackling the Super League clubs.
