In a statement, Everton has lashed out at the clubs that are planning to form the new Super League. With Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea, six English clubs are among the so-called founding clubs of the new European competition. Everton is’ saddened and disappointed ‘by the clubs’ plan to start a league of their own.

“Six clubs operate entirely for their own interests. Six clubs are destroying the reputation of our league and football. Six clubs choose to insult every other Premier League club with whom they normally sit at the table. Six clubs betray the majority of football supporters, inside and outside England ”, writes Everton in a so-called statement from the board, of which Marcel Brands is also a part. “In this time of a national and international crisis, a defining time for football, clubs must work together, for football and the supporters.”

“Instead, these clubs have secretly conspired to create a new league outside of our football pyramid, when it has always been tremendously good for them,” the Everton statement continues. “In this pyramid, Everton thinks of EVERY club, be it Leciester City, Accrington Stanley, Gillingham, Lincoln City, Morecambe, Southend United, Notts County or any other club. Throughout the history of football, we have enriched the lives of our supporters. And vice versa.”

“The self-proclaimed Super Six undermine the structure underneath the football that we all love, ”writes Everton. “The resistance is understandable and justified, it will have to be listened to. The ridiculous arrogance is not wanted in football, except for the clubs that came up with this plan. On behalf of everyone associated with Everton, we respectfully ask that the plan be immediately dismissed and that all backroom deliberations and undermining practices be stopped. It has brought confidence in our wonderful sport to an all-time low. ”

“Finally, we would like to remind the owners, chairmen and board members of the six clubs that they have always had a privileged position as guardians of football. They must take seriously the responsibility they bear. We urge them to rethink what legacy they want to leave behind, ”Everton concludes. Burnley has also distanced himself from the Super League plans in a statement. Chairman Alan Pace is calling on the UK government to take action against the six clubs involved, something Prime Minister Boris Johnson says he is considering. On Twitter, Wolverhampton Wanderers sneered as champion of the 2018/19 season there the Wolves that season finished seventh behind the English Super League clubs.
