FC Twente has examined the options in the contracts of key players Gijs Smal, Mees Hilgers, Ricky van Wolfswinkel and Vaclav Cerny. The latter will therefore remain with the club for two years (until mid-2025). Smal, Hilgers and Van Wolfswinkel are now fixed until mid-2024. Reserve player Max Bruns will also stay with Twente for a season longer, while Denilho Cleonise will be said goodbye after this season. The Tukkers ignore the option to keep the 21-year-old winger longer.

Wout Brama, Julio Pleguezuelo and Virgil Misidjan also have an expiring contract in Enschede, but Twente is still discussing a new contract with the relevant players. Extending Misidjan’s contract seems to be the top priority, as the lightning-fast winger is having an excellent season at Twente. In 29 official games for the club, the 29-year-old forward scored seven goals and five assists. Brama and Pleguezuelo have played significantly less so far.

Twente is still looking for a trainer for the new season. In February, Ron Jans (head coach) and Jan Streuer (technical director) announced their departure from the club. The latter will be replaced by Arnold Bruggink, who is likely to face a busy transfer summer. The outgoing transfer of Hilgers and Smal does not seem an unrealistic scenario, even after the options have been exercised. A departure of Ramiz Zerrouki (contract until mid-2024) is inevitable.

Zerrouki was frequently associated with a transfer to Feyenoord this season, while the inspector said Eindhovens Dagblad is now also at the top of PSV’s list. The people of Eindhoven would also have Hilgers on their radar, although he is also enjoying interest from Ajax. Smal is reportedly back on the lists of various Bundesliga clubs, including Borussia Mönchengladbach.
