Gian Piero Ventrone passed away on Thursday at the age of 61, Tottenham Hotspur announced through the official channels. The Italian worked at the North London club as a fitness coach and was praised for his tough approach and empathy. Ventrone suffered from leukemia and stayed in the Fatebenefratelli hospital in Naples because of his illness. He passed away suddenly on Thursday.

“It is with great sadness that we learned of the death of fitness coach Gian Piero Ventrone,” Tottenham wrote. “He will be greatly missed by everyone at the club and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this impossibly sad time.” Ventrone, who, because of his training regimes in his home country, quickly earned the nickname the Marine was Antonio Conte’s regular fitness guru and moved to Tottenham with his compatriot last year.

The Spurs decided to cancel Conte’s press conference on Thursday morning due to Ventrone’s passing. Sweet off the pitch and demanding on the pitch, Gian Piero quickly became a hugely popular figure with players and staff. Ventrone has held positions with Juventus, Catania, JS Suning, GZ Evergrande and AC Ajaccio in the past. At Juventus, he had players such as Didier Deschamps and Zinedine Zidane under his wing.

Ventrone enjoyed ten glorious years with the Italian superpower between 1994 and 2004. “One of the most historic names at Juventus at the turn of the century has passed away,” Juventus mourned. “Gian Piero helped Marcello Lippi build and nurture a team that won everything in Italy and Europe. He used innovative methods of physical conditioning, inspired by modern criteria, leading the way in Italy and abroad.”
