Tottenham Hotspur seems to have completely lost it in the Premier League. Manager Ange Postecoglou's team suffered a 1-2 defeat at home to West Ham United on Thursday evening. That means that the Spurs have lost no fewer than four of the last five league matches. Tottenham remains in fifth place in the Premier League for the time being, while West Ham consolidates ninth place.
Postecoglou made two changes to his starting eleven compared to the match against Manchester City (3-3). Cristian Romero returned from suspension, meaning Emerson Royal started back on the bench. Furthermore, Pierre-Emile Højbjerg was preferred to Bryan Gil in midfield. The injured Micky van de Ven was still missing.
On the West Ham side, former Ajax players Mohammed Kudus (striker) and Edson Álvarez (left midfield) were both in the starting line-up.
Tottenham dominated in the first half and took the lead after more than ten minutes of play. Romero headed in from a corner: 1-0.
Even after that, the biggest chances were for the home team. For example, goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski saved Giovani Lo Celso's volley and Kurt Zouma almost scored an own goal: the ball ended up on the post via the West Ham defender.
Almost out of nowhere, West Ham leveled just after half-time. Kudus struck from far away, and the ball suddenly ended up at the feet of Jarrod Bowen via two Tottenham defenders. He shot the ball hard and high from close range: 1-1.
Via Richarlison (header wide) and Pedro Porro (fabianski save), Tottenham was close to taking a new lead. However, it was West Ham who actually scored. Destiny Udogie played the ball too short back to goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario. He came out, tapped the ball away just in time, but delivered it into the feet of James Ward-Prowse. He initially hit the post, but the rebound in front of the open goal was spot on: 1-2. Tottenham never recovered from that blow.
