Jens Toornstra hopes to reward the supporters of Feyenoord next Sunday with a special farewell gift: a goal against Ajax. That’s what the 33-year-old midfielder says with a big smile in front of the cameras of Rhine estuary. With his new club FC Utrecht, Toornstra will play a squatter against national champion Ajax on Sunday afternoon at 12.15 pm.

Toornstra was often addressed in recent days about the game against the team from Amsterdam. In Rotterdam it is hoped that the midfielder can immediately score a goal during his return to Utrecht. “He came by often, yes, he came often. I tell everyone that I will do my very best. That would make the weekend extra nice, but I can’t promise anything,” said Toornstra.

On Saturday evening, Toornstra says goodbye to Het Legioen in a sold-out Kuip after eight seasons. For Feyenoord’s match against FC Emmen, the midfielder will be honored for his achievements at the club. Dozens of supporters have been busy in recent days with a mega banner for the club icon, who played a total of 313 times for Feyenoord.

Toornstra scored 65 goals and delivered 62 assists in eight seasons. As a key player, he played an important role in Feyenoord’s first championship in eighteen years. In the 2016/17 season Toornstra scored no fewer than fourteen goals in the Eredivisie, coincidentally all in De Kuip. In addition, the right leg twice won the TOTO KNVB Cup with the club and he also added the Johan Cruijff Scale to his palmares twice. This week he signed a contract that will keep him attached to Utrecht until mid-2024.
