Rubén Semedo was arrested on suspicion of rape on Sunday evening. The defender of Olympiacos was allegedly sexually assaulted a 17-year-old woman the night before, various Greek media reported. The 27-year-old Portuguese will be presented in court on Tuesday, where he will defend himself together with a 41-year-old accomplice. It is not the first time that Semedo has come into contact with the law.

The arrest was made in response to the report made by the underage woman. The alleged victim told the Greek police that she had met the ten-year-older defender at a bar in Oropos, about 50 kilometers from Athens. Semedo then allegedly drove her to his home in the southern suburb of Glyfada, where the woman says she was assaulted.

The news is striking, as Semedo came in negative in the media in February 2018. The centre-back, then on loan on behalf of SD Huesca, was put behind bars for his alleged involvement in an armed robbery. He allegedly broke into a house with two others and tied up a man and beat him with baseball bats. Semedo even allegedly put a gun to the victim’s head and threatened to cut off a finger. Finally, Semedo was released on bail after a payment of thirty thousand euros after five months.

The central defender has been playing in the shirt of Olympiacos since July 2019, which took him over from Villarreal for 4.5 million euros. Rented out after his time in prison el Submarino Amarillo Semedo to Rio Ave, but he would not make more playing minutes in the Estádio de la Cerámica. The stopper also played a total of three international matches on behalf of Portugal.
