Mateu Alemany leaves Barcelona, the Catalans report in an official statement. The technical director has informed chairman Joan Laporta that he wants to take on a new challenge. According to transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano, Alemany already has an offer from Aston Villa and is ready to accept it.
Alemany still has an ongoing contract with Barcelona until mid-2024. However, the technical director will leave the Spotify Camp Nou early. Chairman Laporta has agreed to Alemany’s unexpected departure because of his services to the club. The technical director will officially retire on June 30, but has promised to complete ongoing transfer matters in the summer after his last working day.

Alemany started as technical director of Barcelona in March 2021. Previously he was commercial manager at Valencia and general manager at Real Mallorca. According to Romano, the sixty-year-old football director has already had several offers. He seems to be opting for a new project at Aston Villa, where he will implement the technical policy together with manager Unai Emery.
After the election of Laporta as president of Barcelona, Alemany was appointed technical director. He is seen as the one who, despite the financial constraints, managed to build a championship team of los Azulgrana to form. In the past two seasons he managed to realize major transfers such as Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, Ferran Torres and Jules Koundé. Barcelona will soon announce changes to the technical structure. Alemany works closely with Jordi Cruijff in the sporting field. The Dutchman would, according to ASH now also thinking about a departure from Barça.
