Olympique Lyon suffered an embarrassing defeat in the Ligue 1 on Sunday evening. On a visit to a superior Stade Rennes, Peter Bosz’s team barely managed to create anything and were les Gones vulnerable in the back: 4-1. Due to the defeat, Lyon is on nineteen points from thirteen matches and the club drops to seventh place in the ranking. Stade Rennes retains fifth place with 22 points.
The visitors from Lyon had a hard time in Rennes. The home side had the ball and tested Lyon closing post Anthony Lopes a few times, but the Portuguese kept his team going. In the nineteenth minute, Vitesse’s Conference League opponent even thought he was taking the lead. Left back Birger Meling worked the ball into the net, but was called back for offside. Les Rennais kept pushing and finding Lopes in their path, until he finally capitulated in the first half stoppage time. A corner from Benjamin Bourigeaud landed on the head of Gaëtan Laborde, who put the visitors behind: 1-0.
Bosz brought in an extra attacker with Islam Slimani, who managed to find the net twice in last Thursday’s meeting with Sparta Prague (3-0). It did not help. A neat cross ball landed against Jason Denayer’s body and from the rebound Hamari Traoré shot the 2-0 against the ropes. Lyon had to push and created opportunities through Lucas Paquetá and club top scorer Karl Toko Ekambi, but without success. Fifteen minutes before the end, the suffering for Bosz and his associates became even greater. Substitute Adrien Truffert broke out and was pushed by Lyon defender Léo Dubois. In his fall, the Belgian tapped the ball past Lopes: 3-0.
The visitors seemed to have given up all hope and stood by when Truffert also took care of the 4-0. A low cross from fellow substitute Lorenz Assignon ended up at the back, who completed beautifully behind the hopeless Lopes in the intersection. In the final phase Lyon managed to save the honor somewhat. Paquetá earned a penalty after a charge by Nayef Aguerd and went behind the ball himself for the 4-1. Nevertheless, it was a final score that Bosz and Lyon will not be able to live with.
