Steven Bergwijn did not come out of the World Cup qualifier between the Dutch national team and Turkey (6-1) unscathed. The wing attacker was replaced by national coach Louis van Gaal after an hour and he sat on the reserve bench with an ice pack and bandage around his ankle. A day later, the English media doubted Bergwijn’s availability in Tottenham Hotspur’s away game against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Bergwijn will be extensively examined by the medical staff of Tottenham in the run-up to the London derby, with 13.30 Dutch time as the starting time. The news about the ankle injury is a setback for manager Nuno Espírito Santo, who also has concerns about the availability of Heung-min Son due to a calf injury. In addition, Oliver Skipp dropped out of Young England in the final phase on Tuesday evening due to a groin injury.

Bergwijn could not count on a base place under Jose Mourinho who left earlier this year, but everything seems to be different for the winger since Santo’s entrance in north London. The the Dutch international had a basic place in the first three competition matches, by Tottenham in all cases won 1-0. Bergwijn made a passionate impression in these duels, so it was obvious that he would also start on Saturday. However, the ankle injury has cast doubt on that.

Santo has even more concerns in preparation for the resumption in the Premier League. Davinson Sánchez, Giovani Lo Celso and Cristian Romero traveled without permission to the national teams of Colombia and Argentina respectively. South America is on the British government’s red list, which means that Premier League clubs do not want to give up players for international matches. The trio nevertheless traveled, which means that they will probably be punished and miss the away game against Crystal Palace.
