Olympique Marseille was unable to escape the sporting malaise on Saturday evening. After the hopeless defeat against Paris Saint-Germain (4-0), they narrowly lost to the new leader AS Monaco on Saturday: 3-2. Marseille, one of Ajax’s opponents in the Europa League, has now not won five official matches in a row and is eighth in Ligue 1.

The French top team had a very goal-rich opening phase, with four goals in the first 23 minutes. A cross from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was met with great fortune by Iliman Ndiaye, who scored after 31 seconds: 0-1. With a vicious shot into the short corner, Maghnes Akliouche made it 1-1 within a few minutes. The 1-2 came in the eighteenth minute by Samuel Gigot, who scored beautifully from a cross from Ndiaye.

Folarin Balogun made it 2-2 five minutes later. The striker, who was acquired from Arsenal for thirty million euros, rounded an opponent on the edge of the penalty area and fired in a devastating shot: 2-2. Akliouche missed two good chances a short time later, but made it 3-2 in the 52nd minute. Balogun cleared the ball with his shoulder, after which Akliouche shot in nicely off the bounce.
