Aleksandr Kokorin faces his first adventure outside of Russia. The attacker will leave Spartak Moscow for a contract with Fiorentina until mid-2024, the Russian club announced on official channels on Thursday. According to media in Italy, the transfer involves four million euros plus possible bonuses. Kokorin is expected in Florence for the medical examination in the coming days.

As a result, the 48-time international says goodbye to Spartak after six months. He signed a three-season contract in Moscow in August 2020, with the option of an additional year, after his contract with Zenit St Petersburg expired. Partly due to injuries, Kokorin got off to a false start at Spartak. In the end he came to eight games and two goals this season, including one in his last appearance, on November 29 against Rotor Volgograd (2-0 win).

Kokorin has had a number of eventful years. Just like fellow international Pavael Mamev, he was sentenced to a prison sentence of one and a half years in May 2019, after they mutually assaulted two people in a restaurant. In September 2019, Kokorin was released early and subsequently loaned out by Zenit to Sochi, for which he scored seven times in ten matches. After that season, he made the transfer to Spartak. The 29-year-old attacker also played in Russia for Dynamo Moscow and Anzhi Makhachkala.

A year ago he was still associated with Feyenoord. Dick Advocaat knew Kokorin from his time as national coach of Russia and inquired about Kokorin. “If we can get it, I’ll pick it up myself,” he said at the time Football International. In the end it didn’t get that far. After the sale of Kokorin, Spartak has more room for the arrival of Quincy Promes, both financially and in the selection. The current number three in Russia reported this week to be in talks with Ajax about a return of the winger.
