The family of Abdelhak Nouri has filed an arbitration case against Ajax with the KNVB, the NOS Thursday evening. Both parties have not been able to reach an agreement, so the family opts for a legal action. Edwin van der Sar, the general manager of Ajax, has previously stated that an arbitration case was likely.

“The shortcomings mean that Abdelhak is permanently dependent on the care of others and has not been able to show how his promising career as a footballer would have developed,” say lawyers Lucas Hogeling and John Beer. Ajax has acknowledged that the treatment that Nouri received on the field in Mayrhofen, Austria, was inadequate and assumed liability, but neither party subsequently came to a compensation settlement.

Khalid Kasem, the family’s advocate, says that ‘no amount’ can make up for the loss of the ‘old’ Nouri and his broken football career. “The wild stories about the alleged financial demands of the Nouri family lead to oversimplified reactions and unfounded speculation. These deeply affect the family and detract from Abdelhak and everything he stood for.”

For the time being, the parties involved have not wanted to reveal anything about the amounts mentioned in the talks. Hogeling and Beer explain how the compensation should be structured in their view. “This concerns in particular the costs of his care, the loss of his earning capacity and the compensation for immaterial damage in the form of grief money.” Ajax is expected to come up with a written response, after which the arbitration committee of the KNVB will pass judgment.
