Sparta Rotterdam has definitively secured the services of Shurandy Sambo, the club reports. The twenty-year-old defender will be rented from PSV next season. Sparta has also managed to negotiate an option to purchase. The transfer had been in the air for a while. Sambo successfully passed his medical examination on Wednesday and turns down interest from Vitesse, who was also interested.

Sambo is known at PSV as a great talent. In the preparation he played with the Eindhoven team in the exhibition matches with Arminia Bielefeld, Villarreal and FC Eindhoven and he left a good impression. In April, he already extended his contract with PSV by two years, until mid-2024. Yet there was little prospect of playing time for the right back next season, as coach Ruud van Nistelrooij prefers acquisition Ki-Jana Hoever and Phillipp Mwene as right back. Mauro Júnior can also play as a right back.

“Shurandy is a boy in whom we see a lot of potential”, technical director Gerard Nijkamp said enthusiastically on the Sparta website. “He has shown that he has outgrown the level of the Kitchen Champion Division and that he can make the step to the Eredivisie. He will have the opportunity to prove his quality with us there, and will give us more defensive options on the right side this season, after which we have the opportunity to capture him definitively.”

“I have spoken to many former players who have played here,” adds Sambo. “Denzel Dumfries, for example. They have all indicated that it is a very close club. The people are good, the supporters are good, that gives me confidence. I heard from Denzel that he comes to buy a shirt every year. Those are beautiful things. I had conversations with the trainer and the technical director and I had a good feeling about that. The trainer has a clear plan, that’s why I made this choice.”
