Willem II and ADO Den Haag shared the points on Tuesday evening in a real relegation cracker. The match, rife with debatable decisions by referee Siemen Mulder, ended in 1-1. Both teams received a penalty and a red card in the game, which had not happened since the match between FC Groningen and sc Heerenveen (1-1) in December 2014. Willem II and ADO remain stuck in place sixteen and seventeen respectively and are tied in points. The lead over FC Emmen is increased to five points.

In the first half, not a single valid shot on goal was recorded by either team, but there were plenty of remarkable moments. In the nineteenth minute Willem II thought to take the lead after a striking header by Wesley Spieringhs from a corner kick. The goal, however, was rejected by Mulder, who rebuked a slight push by Kwasi Wriedt on goalkeeper Martin Fraisl.

In the remainder of the first company were the best opportunities for ADO. First Ricardo Kishna saw a promising shot blocked at the last minute by Sebastian Holmén. Moments later, Kishna broke through again and was hit with the knee by Holmén from behind, but Mulder thought it was not worth a penalty. The referee gave Tomislav Gomelt red just before half time, after the ADO midfielder kicked Wriedt down out of frustration, with no intention of playing the ball.

Willem II received a penalty kick in the first minute after the break when Michiel Kramer gave Spieringhs a light push to get the ball away. The debatable penalty kick was used by substitute Mike Trésor Ndayishimiye. The Tilburg team seemed to have the game under control, but quickly gave it away. Jordens Peters kicked the underside of Kramer’s foot in an attempt to clear the ball from his own sixteen-meter area, causing a penalty. That was used by Shaquille Pinas: 1-1. Fifteen minutes later it got even worse for Willem II, when Peters got his second yellow card of the game for a charge on Jonas Arweiler. Peters initially played the ball, but then also hit the striker of ADO.
