Oussama Idrissi and Nemanja Gudelj will not play on behalf of Sevilla in the Champions League this season. The LaLiga club has announced on the club’s website that the two are excluded by UEFA rules. Karim Rekik, on the other hand, is registered.

A club may not put more than 25 players on the A-list. Eight players on this list must be locally trained players. These are players who played at the club for a minimum of three years between the ages of 15 and 21. This category also includes players who played at another club within the same football association in the same period, the Spanish in this case. Because Sevilla cannot comply with this rule, the Champions League squad for the A-list is limited to 22 players. Trainer Julen Lopetegui has chosen not to rely on Gudelj and Idrissi, two ex-players from AZ, in the billion-dollar ball. Joris Gnagnon and Ibrahim Amadou have also been left out of the Champions League selection by the club.

Lopetegui’s decision is a hard blow for Gudelj and Idrissi. The latter came over from AZ last year for an amount of fourteen million euros. After a disappointing first half of the season, he was rented out to Ajax for the past six months, where he barely got to play. The pair will have to watch the matches against VfL Wolfsburg, RB Leipzig and Lille OSC from the stands.
