Sevilla have claimed second place in La Liga with a win over Villarreal. In their own Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán, the team of trainer Julen Lopetegui won 1-0 with a goal from Lucas Ocampos. With the win, Sevilla has 31 points from 15 games; Leaders Real Madrid have 36 out of 15, while Atlético Madrid is 29 out of 14 and will play against Real Mallorca on Saturday evening.
Villarreal has yet to win a single away game this season, while Sevilla are one of the best performing teams at home. The home side looked for an early opening goal and were rewarded after fifteen minutes. After a tight cross by Marcos Acuña from the left wing, Lucas Ocampos headed towards the far post and found the right corner. Rafa Mir thought not much later to make it 2-0, but his goal was disallowed for offside.
Where Villarreal was pushed back before the break, the initiative lay with the visitors after the break. Substitute Gerard Moreno shot straight at keeper Bono, after which he shot just wide. Eleven minutes from time, a golden opportunity arose for Moreno, who managed to cross the far post when he was completely clear in front of goal after a shot by Pervis Estupiñán missed the right direction. Sevilla didn’t get into big trouble anymore.
