Marcos Senesi chooses to remain available for the Argentina national team. On Friday, several journalists from Italy announced that he was also called up for the pre-selection of gli Azzurri† The 25-year-old Feyenoord defender confirms he had an invitation, but currently prefers an international career with Argentina.

“It is of course great that two national teams want me,” Senesi told the Argentine newspaper ole† “In any case, that means that I do my job well. The rumors about Italy are true. I’ve been in touch with Mancini, he told me about his project. Then I also spoke to the Argentine technical staff and at that time I expressed my wish to play for that country. My decision is already made, yes.”

Senesi agrees that Mancini wanted to convince him to choose the national team of Italy. “He wants to put together a new team and wanted me to be part of it. He’s about to go through a major restructuring at Italy and wanted me to be a part of that.” With his dual citizenship and his young age, Senesi would have been an interesting option for Mancini, as centre-back Leonardo Bonucci (35) and Giorgio Chiellini (37) are of age.

The Feyenoord mandekker said he did not have to think long to finally make the decision. “I sat down with family members and listened to them, but the reality is that from childhood I have always dreamed of playing for the Argentina national team,” said Senesi.

Argentina and Italy will meet in June in the context of the so-called Finalissima, a match between the winners of the European Championship and the Copa América. That poster was already finished in 1985 and 1993 and was revived after last year’s European Championship and the Copa América. The match will be played at Wembley and is part of a closer partnership between UEFA and CONMEBOL. Because Senesi has both an Italian and an Argentine passport, he is eligible to play for both countries. He could have become the first ever player to be called up by two countries for the same match.
