If it’s up to Wayne Rooney, Manchester United will choose Mauricio Pochettino in the search for a new manager. The current coach of Paris Saint-Germain, along with Erik ten Hag, is currently the two main candidates to take over from interim manager Ralf Rangnick after this season at Old Trafford. Rooney catches up Sky Sports expressed his preference for Pochettino.

“Pochettino has shown it in the Premier League, he knows the competition,” Rooney refers to Pochettino’s time at Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur, for whom he worked in the English league between January 2013 and November 2019. “At Tottenham and Southampton he has brought many young players into his squad. So if I have to make a choice between Pochettino and Ten Hag, I choose Pochettino.”

“I would go for Pochettino and give him time. Managers need time to find their place and make their mark on the club and the team. So I think he’s going to do well if he gets the time,” said Rooney. Pochettino still has a contract with PSG until mid-2023, but there is much speculation about an early departure. The Argentine coach said last weekend that he “will respect PSG’s decision”. Pochettino and Ten Hag are said to have already had a first conversation with Manchester United.

As it looks now, Ten Hag or Pochettino will not get Paul Pogba at Manchester United. The French midfielder is in possession of an expiring contract. “He’s at a point where it might be better for him to take a step, Paul is honest with himself,” Rooney notes. “He probably hasn’t had the impact he’d hoped for since his return to Manchester United. He is a completely different player with the French team.”
