RKC Waalwijk was able to add three points in the Eredivisie on Sunday. At home, the team of coach Joseph Oosting came back twice from a deficit against Excelsior and the North Brabants came out on top: 5-2. It was the first victory of the season for RKC, which currently occupies eighth place in the ranking. The Rotterdammers drop to ninth position in the Eredivisie.
Dario Van den Buijs returned to the home team in the five-man defense at the expense of Lars Nieuwpoort. Pelle Clement also replaced the injured Patrick Vroegh on the left in midfield. On the other side, Mike van Duinen was in the starting line-up for the first time since his return to Excelsior, just like Adrian Fein. The latter came over from Greuther Fürth during the transfer period and had to settle for a reserve role in the opening matches of the Eredivisie.
The game started with a big setback for Excelsior, because in the third minute of play Marouan Azarkan had to leave the field with an apparently serious knee injury. His replacement, Julian Baas, opened the score after fifteen minutes of play. Nathan Tjoe-A-On gave a nice cross towards the first post, where the substitute was able to tap in just ahead of Van Duinen: 0-1. Seven minutes before the halftime signal, RKC equalized: after a corner from Florian Jozefzoon, Shawn Adewoye nodded through the legs of goalkeeper Stijn van Gassel to make the 1-1.
On the stroke of the halftime signal, Excelsior took the lead again. Again there was a lack of concentration in the Waalwijk defence, because this time captain Redouan El Yaakoubi was able to head in from a corner: 1-2. In the second act, the home team realized a remontada. The equalizer came five minutes after the break, when Clement was put alone in front of the goal by Vurnon Anita. The midfielder scored the 2-2 in a cool way. After an hour of play, RKC took the lead for the first time. On a pass from Julen Lobete, Thierry Lutonda hit the bottom of the bar. The 4-2 was won by Anita, who headed in from a cross by Van den Buijs; in stoppage time Michiel Kramer took care of the final score: 5-2
