Real Madrid suffered an embarrassing defeat in LaLiga on Saturday. Four days before the first Champions League match against Shakhtar Donetsk, the team of trainer Zinedine Zidane did not know what to do with Cádiz: 0-1. Due to the surprising victory in Madrid, the doctoral candidate is currently in the lead with Real Madrid in LaLiga, although the reigning champion has played one match less. Real Madrid’s goal difference after five league games is revealing, however: six goals for, three against.

Real Madrid never gave the impression of feeling at ease in the first half. Cádiz was superior to Zidane’s team and had several scoring chances. It ended up being a direct hit after fifteen minutes of play: Álvaro Negredo headed the ball in the course of Anthony Lozano, who then, with some luck, passed the ball over Thibaut Courtois. Real Madrid had already got away well in the first minute when Sergio Ramos cleared a Negredo bet from the goal mouth.

This man already knows exactly what’s going to happen.

Zidane watched passively as Real Madrid could barely create chances or create danger around Jeremías Ledesma’s goal area. Only Raphaël Varane from a corner was close to an equalizing goal in the remainder of the first half. Zidane took a lot in the break: he took Ramos (injury), Luka Modric, Isco and Lucas Vázquez to the side, in favor of Eder Militao, Casemiro, Marco Asensio and Federico Valverde.

Real Madrid also struggled to get through Cádiz’s defense in the second half and got away well when a header from Negredo just went wide. However, Zidane saw how his team did everything it could to get at least the same level. After a cross from Toni Kroos, Ledesma made a mistake, but Vinicius Junior’s header went wide. Nine minutes before the end, a bet by Karim Benzema ended on the crossbar.

Real Madrid’s defeat against Cádiz was actually already written in the stars. Valencia, the leader after the first match day in 2020/21, lost on the second match day. The leader after the second matchday, Granada, lost on the third matchday. The leader after the third match day, Real Betis, went down on the fourth match day. The leader after the fourth match day, Getafe, went down on the fifth match day. The leader after the fifth match day, Real Madrid, went down on Saturday evening on the sixth match day.
