PSV qualified for the third preliminary round of the Champions League on Wednesday without any problems. A week after the 5-1 victory over Galatasaray, Roger Schmidt’s team also won in Istanbul: 1-2. The match was played at Istanbul Basaksehir’s Fatih Terim Stadium, as work is currently underway at Galatasaray Stadium. The only blemish on the victory was a red card for Olivier Boscagli in the second half. PSV will meet Celtic or FC Midtjylland in the next round.

PSV entered the starting eleven with one new player compared to the home game: Cody Gakpo replaced Yorbe Vertessen. Galatasaray was obviously out for an early goal and PSV’s main task was to repel the attack. The Eindhoven team were not convincing in possession in the opening phase of the match, but did not run into problems in the back. Galatasaray struggled to find the space and failed in the passing. During the first half, PSV took the initiative and threatened the enemy half a few times.

PSV’s opening goal did not come completely out of the blue, although PSV was lucky. After a spinning free kick from Gakpo, goalkeeper Fernando Muslera punched the ball away, allowing Noni Madueke to try from the second line. The Englishman saw his effort changed by a raised leg from Marcão, which left Muslera without a chance; trainer Fatih Terim was annoyed on the sidelines by the fact that the keeper did not clamp the ball in the first instance. The goal probably lost the last glimmer of hope for Galatasaray.

Ryan Babel made his entrance for the home team at the beginning of the second half. The attacker dared a long shot within the minute, which sailed well over. PSV then had several opportunities: Marco van Ginkel headed wide after a corner from Philipp Max, after which a deflected shot by Eran Zahavi was cleared by Muslera. Van Ginkel then scored after a beautifully played attack and an assist from Mario Götze. Sixteen minutes before the end, the game took an unexpected turn with a red card for Boscagli, after he was booked twice within ten minutes for a handball and a foul on Mbaye Diagne.

Aytaç Kara shot just over Joël Drommel’s goal from the ensuing free kick. Galatasaray saw the opportunity to score another goal and did so six minutes before the end. After a cross from substitute Emre Tasdemir from the left wing, Diagne kept his opponent Nick Viergever away and managed to get the ball into the goal at the near post. Despite this, the victory for PSV was no longer in danger. Schmidt’s team will face Celtic or FC Midtjylland in the next round. The first game in the third heat will be played next week; the return waits a week later.
