Premier League clubs can breathe a sigh of relief after talks with FIFA, the FA, the Premier League and the football associations of Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Paraguay. South American internationals from the English top league who missed their country’s recent international matches can still play for their clubs this weekend. FIFA has lifted a suspension.

Several Premier League clubs recently decided not to hand over internationals to Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Paraguay, because the players would have had to travel to countries that are on the red list in view of the corona virus. If these players had gone, they would have had to quarantine for ten days on their return to England.

The Brazilian football association CBF was disappointed by this decision and therefore wanted to ensure that the Brazilian Premier League players could not play for their club this weekend. The CBF referred to a FIFA rule, which states that football associations can request that players who have not been relinquished by their clubs do not play for five days after the international match period.

The CBF had reportedly requested that Alisson Becker, Fabinho, Roberto Firmino (Liverpool), Ederson, Gabriel Jesus (Manchester City), Fred (Manchester United), Thiago Silva (Chelsea) and Raphinha (Leeds United) not play. However, an agreement was reached between the parties involved on Friday evening, so that the internationals can still take action in this Premier League round.
