Ronald de Boer gave his view on the situation of Marc Overmars at Ajax on Monday evening. People work very hard and then they think: you work at Ajax, so you also behave according to the slogan ‘We are Ajax, we are the best’. For example, if I look at Erik ten Hag, that is, in my view, an example of civility. When I look at the youth trainers at Ajax, they are all hard-working guys who have ambitions to become a head coach. It’s not like I think at all: there are guys walking around who all think they are Johan Cruijff and behave accordingly.”
“Furthermore, you only have people who are trained, for example to give a face to the social media platform or the business relations,” continues De Boer. “I only know great people, who have probably studied very hard and are doing a great job for Ajax. Sure, it could be there, but it could also be here at the table. I don’t think Overmars wanted to throw that out on the street. He didn’t want it to be known. Unfortunately, these kinds of incidents happen and you often respond too late,” suggests the analyst, who has already been in contact with Overmars.
“If you make the decision to step down, it means you’ve made quite a mess. I’ve really been through everything with him, all the successes… He’s just one of the guys† You just don’t believe it at first. I really thought, do you think you’re Brad Pitt or something? That’s what I wrote to him: ‘Marc, you messed up. I hope you get out, but it’s terrible.” He sent a heart back. I really mean it, this sucks for his family too.
