Mark van Bommel is going to work as a trainer of Royal Antwerp, reports The Telegraph† Marc Overmars considers the former PSV player and coach a dream candidate for the trainer position in Antwerp, where Van Bommel has been reported several times by the newspaper. Van Bommel is going to sign with Antwerp for two years and therefore turned down Racing Genk, which was also very interested.

Antwerp is visibly reaping the benefits of Overmars’ appointment as technical director for the first time, because Van Bommel would probably not choose Antwerp without his presence. After his failed adventures at PSV and VfL Wolfsburg, the coach attaches great importance to support from the management and knows that it will be enormous with Overmars.

Van Bommel is appointed in the knowledge that Antwerp will finish fourth in the play-offs for champions. Antwerp will therefore start next season in the second preliminary round of the Conference League. The club’s ambitions go much further than that, because the immensely wealthy Paul Gheysens, one of the most wealthy Belgians, is fully committed to the Belgian national title, after the national cup was already won in 2020. For that reason, Antwerp also went far this year for Overmars, who received a large budget for the purchase policy.

Van Bommel will do everything in his power to make his third job as head coach a success. The former midfielder started energetically at PSV in 2018 and missed the national title in a strong season, but was fired in his second season after a dramatic series. Van Bommel also had a strong start at Wolfsburg this season, in which even the first place in the Bundesliga was briefly tapped. In Germany things went wrong much faster than at PSV and Van Bommel was out on the street again in October.
