Bayern Munich is considering a reunion with Jerôme Boateng, it is reported BILD. The reason is the defensive problems. Der Rekordmeister has not had Dayot Upamecano available for several weeks and also saw Matthijs de Ligt drop out with an injury on Wednesday. The Dutchman is expected to be out for four to six weeks.

The first half of the season is expected to be almost over for De Ligt. The center back suffered damage to the inner ligament of his right knee and limped off the field on Wednesday evening in the lost cup match against FC Saarbrücken (2-1).

To alleviate defensive concerns, a reunion with Boateng is being considered. The German with Ghanaian roots was also in the picture in October, but was then told that a return was not a possibility. Boateng has been without a club since leaving Olympique Lyon last summer.

Boateng does not have to come from far away for a possible conversation. The defender is already training at Bayern, where he maintains his fitness with the promise team. Last week there was reportedly renewed talk of the defender’s short-term return.

It sounds like a reunion with Boateng would be a logical step in several respects. The man marker is familiar with the club, the competition and knows most of the players from the current selection. Moreover, Boateng is in top condition and the defensive problems are enormous at Bayern.

Boateng was taken over by Bayern from Manchester City in the summer of 2011 and would go on to become champion nine times in southern Germany and win the Champions League twice. After 363 games in all competitions, he moved to Olympique Lyon two years ago.

It was never a great success at the fallen French top club. “In retrospect, we have to admit that signing Boateng was not a good idea because he was never able to live up to our expectations,” sporting director Juninho said a month ago. The two parties parted ways last summer.
