The match between Feyenoord and PEC Zwolle was suspended for about thirteen minutes on Sunday afternoon. In the second half, fireworks were thrown from the home section into Feyenoord’s sixteen-meter area, after which referee Martin van den Kerkhof led the players inside. Ofir Marciano, the goalkeeper of Feyenoord, had a scratch on his leg due to the explosions. He showed that injury to the arbiter.

“We have just been told that Marciano has a scratch on his leg from the fireworks, which is of course unbelievable,” says presenter Aletha Leidelmeijer of ESPN† “It is terribly unlikely. They are going in.” Kees Kwakman is stunned. “It is unbelievable. It is such a beautiful game, also for the PEC supporters. PEC is still full in the game. Because Senesi then commits a violation and they think it is yellow, they throw fireworks.”

“It’s just one or two guys. It drives you crazy every time,” said Kwakman. The stadium speaker of PEC then called on the supporters to support the team in the best possible way. The game resumed after about thirteen minutes. At the time of the strike it was 1-1 thanks to an own goal and a goal on the right side of Luis Sinisterra.

“I think it is more favorable for PEC to go inside for a while, because Feyenoord had really changed something. You saw that they came into play better after the 1-1,” said Kwakman. “Perhaps there was also a bit of fatigue at PEC, because they have to give a lot to get this done. Now they may be able to set up the team differently.” Earlier this season, fireworks were thrown on the field during matches such as SC Cambuur – FC Utrecht, FC Utrecht – Vitesse and Vitesse – Sparta Rotterdam.
