Negotiations between Andreas Christensen and Chelsea about a new contract have broken down for the time being, reports The Telegraph. The London club believed that an agreement in principle had been reached with the 25-year-old centre-back, but was surprised to hear additional demands. A transfer-free departure of Christensen is now threatening.

Chelsea thought they were out of business with Christensen on a new five-year deal, until the Dane’s agent asked for a postponement due to an amendment to the requirements. Chelsea was then stunned by the advocate’s new proposal: Christensen does not want to sign for five, but only three seasons. Although both sides declined to comment, negotiations are The Telegraph temporarily discontinued.

There remains faith and hope within Chelsea that Christensen will sign a new contract. Thomas Tuchel considers the mandekker an important part of his plans and therefore wants to extend the collaboration. Christensen took advantage of the German’s arrival, because under his predecessor Frank Lampard, the defender was usually a reserve. However, in Tuchel’s system with three centre-backs, Christensen, who has played for Chelsea since he was sixteen, is considered a basic player.

Chelsea is very keen to keep the Dane, as there is a threat of an exodus at the club next summer. Antonio Rüdiger, like Christensen, has an expiring contract and does not appear to be extending it. There are currently no negotiations with the 28-year-old German, who demands a weekly salary of 233,000 euros. Rüdiger is in the interest of Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. The contracts of 32-year-old César Azpilicueta and 37-year-old Thiago Silva also expire, but Chelsea is in no hurry with the duo.
