The negotiations between Ajax and André Onana about a new contract have been stopped, Marc Overmars explains ESPN. The team from Amsterdam wanted to extend the contract of the 25-year-old goalkeeper until mid-2022, but did not agree with Onana on this. Overmars, director of football affairs at Ajax, does not rule out that Onana will leave transfer-free in eighteen months.

“The state of affairs is actually not very good. We’re not going to get out, no. That means that we have stopped the negotiations ”, Overmars says. Reporter Hans Kraay junior asks whether that means that Onana will walk out the door in the summer of 2022. “That could be. I don’t know if they are after that. Maybe he’ll try to make a transfer in July. He has the right to serve the following year. It is a pity that we did not resolve it.

Trainer Erik ten Hag says in front of the camera ESPN that Onana ‘for the time being’ does not agree with Ajax. “We will see how things will soon turn out at CAS, with the case that serves. It should be clear that I have a very good relationship with André and that I really want to keep him at Ajax. He is important to us. This is his choice. ”

In February, it was announced that Onana had been caught on the drug furosemide, which he allegedly took unknowingly. The goalkeeper mistook a tablet from his wife for an acetaminophen, which caused him to test positive for the banned substance. There is still a case at the highest sports tribunal (CAS) against the year of suspension that he received, but it looks like Ajax will have to sell him next summer to still have a decent transfer fee left to him. For that reason, Ajax wanted to extend its contract running until mid-2022 for ‘several years’.

“We are in talks, I hope there will be clarity soon. I expect that. That should be for several years, yes, ”Overmars said recently before the Europa League quarter-final match against AS Roma about the negotiations with Onana. Apparently, neither party has come to an agreement. Onana has been under contract with Ajax since January 2015, after he was taken over from Barcelona. The Cameroon international has provisionally played 204 games for the team from Amsterdam.
