The DFB sees Julian Nagelsmann as the ideal successor to the dismissed Hansi Flick, according to various German media, including the German branch of Sky Sports. Nagelsmann was fired from Bayern Munich in March due to ‘disappointing results’, which replaced him with Thomas Tuchel. It is not yet known how the 35-year-old coach himself feels about employment with the national team.

However, there are still some snags to Nagelsmann’s appointment. The former trainer of RB Leipzig and TSG Hoffenheim, among others, is still under contract der Rekordmeister, where he earns around 5.5 million euros per year. If the DFB does indeed opt for Nagelsmann as Flick’s successor, the association will have to pay an amount to Bayern. Although the club would also consider selling him for free, so that he disappears from the books.

The DFB has still not contacted Germany’s record champion. The union has paid Flick a severance package of 4.5 million euros and, according to Sky Sports no desire to also pay an amount for Nagelsmann’s services. It therefore seems that the 35-year-old trainer will only become the new national coach if Bayern lets him leave for free.

The DFB is already in discussions with Nagelsmann himself, as Matt Law, a journalist, knew TheTelegraph to report on Monday. In addition to Nagelsmann, the association is also talking to Matthias Sammer about a possible employment contract with the national team. If both prove to be unfeasible, the DFB will switch to Rudi Völler as an emergency solution. Louis van Gaal, who was described as ‘an interesting outsider’ immediately after Flick’s dismissal, is therefore no longer in the picture.
