NAC Breda responded on Wednesday to the commotion that arose after the departure of Maurice Steijn as head coach. The club from the Kitchen Champion Division puts on the garb and says it acted out of emotion, according to the statement by general manager Mattijs Manders. In the press release, NAC pointed out, among other things, BN DeStem. The press release has since been removed from the website and Manders still apologizes.

The management, supervisory board and major shareholders of NAC criticized, among other things, the reporting of the regional daily newspaper BN DeStem. “Hopefully the people who caused the incitement around the club and the person Maurice realize the damage they have done to the club, the city, people personally and the social climate. Unfortunately, this also includes a number of people close to the club and certain media. They will have to consult themselves,” the club wrote at the time following Steijn’s departure as trainer.

The supporters of NAC Breda planned ‘appropriate actions’, if Steijn had not left Breda before Saturday 19 June at 23:59. The story that the Rat Verlegh Stadium would be stormed by angry supporters later turned out to be incorrect, the local police emphasized. “As a result of the ultimatum, a press release was sent under pressure about the departure of the trainer, who did not have the right tone due to the emotions of the moment. This has led to the wrong conclusions,” said Manders.

“The press release was obviously not intended to hit well-intentioned and loyal supporters,” the general manager continues. “However, well-meaning supporters do not have full control over the malicious. It only takes one dissenter among them who will change their mind. In addition, it cannot be the case that a club is ruled by ultimatums. People who work for the club on a daily basis must feel safe at all times. The management decides whether or not its employees stay on. Supporters in turn need to understand this.”

Manders offers retroactively his apologies for the events and the communication that followed. “I have of course followed the comments in recent weeks and they were not tender,” says Manders. “Now that we have moved on for some time and the emotion has subsided, I have to say in all honesty that I understand this. With this message I would like to apologize for this message to everyone who cares about NAC; led by emotion. Many loyal supporters were hurt by this and that simply should not have been allowed. We will therefore remove the message in question from our website. It was a roller coaster in which emotion sometimes took the upper hand.”
