NAC Breda has handed out a stadium ban to the man who threw a plastic cup at referee Joey Kooij’s car on Wednesday evening. It happened after the game between NAC and FC Emmen (1-2) in the Kitchen Champion Play-Offs, when the referee wanted to drive away. In the meantime, Kooij himself has decided not to press charges against the man, who has confessed.

Kooij was about to leave the Rat Verlegh Stadium on Wednesday evening, when angry NAC supporters targeted his car. According to various reports, the arbitrator was pelted, after which Kooij got out and addressed the crowd. The Telegraph wrote based on an eyewitness that one of the perpetrators could be immediately arrested by the police. The referee was already the target of whistle concerts and hurtful chants during the match.

On Friday, NAC responds to the incident on the club website. “Fortunately, the referee’s car was not damaged. With the confession of the perpetrator, the police have drawn up an official report. A representative of NAC had contact with the referee yesterday to apologize for the incident on behalf of the club. In this case it was a one-man action, in which the perpetrator has admitted guilt. He has now been imposed an environmental and stadium ban by the municipality and the police.

On Thursday, the KNVB already indicated that it would investigate the incident. “We are in contact with Joey. Together we will see how we deal with this situation. It remains unaffected that these kinds of actions are ridiculous and we believe that referees should be able to do their job safely at all times.” Kooij has now decided not to file a report.
