Michael van Gerwen is preparing with a striking training partner for the quarterfinals of the Grand Slam of Darts, the prestigious darts tournament in Wolverhampton. The three-time world champion from the Netherlands was joined during his training by Declan Rice, midfielder for West Ham United and the England national team.

The two then also drank a cup of coffee, according to a post by the darts champion on Instagram. Van Gerwen defeated Gary Anderson in a long tie on Thursday, 10-8, to reach the quarterfinals. In the last eight, Van Gerwen, who won the Grand Slam of Darts in 2015, 2016 and 2017, will face Michael Smith on Saturday. The Englishman was too strong for Joe Cullen earlier in the evening: 10-5.

Gerwyn Price and James Wade qualified for the semifinals of the Grand Slam of Darts on Friday. The other quarterfinals, Van Gerwen-Smith and Peter Wright-Fallon Sherrock, will be played on Saturday. The semi-finals and final are on Sunday. The winner of the tournament will take home an amount of almost 150,000 euros.

Rice, 22, is one of the trendsetters for the strong performing West Ham this season, which is currently third in the Premier League. Earlier this week, the midfielder received wonderful compliments from former footballer and former national coach Glenn Hoddle. “I think we have incredible footballers in this country. And I also think Rice is the best footballer in the Premier League. He just gets better and better.”
