Borussia Dortmund has suffered a very expensive defeat at home with a view to a place in the top four in the Bundesliga. Despite a goal from Donyell Malen, coach Edin Terzic's team lost 2-3 to TSG Hoffenheim at Signal Iduna Park. Dortmund is still fourth, but feels the hot breath of RB Leipzig, which has one point less, on its neck. Hoffenheim, where Wout Weghorst only came as a substitute, is a very creditable seventh.

The match could hardly have started worse for Dortmund, who already found themselves behind in the second minute. Ihlas Bebou received the ball on the right side of the sixteen, looked up and worked the ball from an awkward angle behind the hopeless Alexander Meyer, the replacement for the injured Gregor Kobel: 0-1.

Dortmund played sloppily, although they slowly but surely improved in the match. Malen cut inside and saw his shot blocked by a visitors' defender. Ian Maatsen also got a chance on the left side of the field. The left back sprinted into the box and was just a bit faster than his direct opponent, after which he no longer had the necessary rest to finish. He shot over.

The biggest chance for Dortmund came in the twentieth minute. Malen was sent deep and was given the opportunity to finish with the left. His shot towards the far corner was just tapped out by Oliver Baumann. Malen didn't have to grieve for long, because shortly afterwards it was a hit. Julian Brandt swung the ball from a corner to the far post, where Malen took advantage of Marco Reus' header and scored: 1-1.

Dortmund got wings from the equalizer and pushed Hoffenheim back considerably. A free kick on the right side of the field automatically created a danger because Reus took advantage of the opportunity. The technician painted the ball at the first post on the head of Nico Schlotterbeck, who headed it convincingly: 2-1. It was Reus' second assist within a few minutes.

Hoffenheim therefore seemed ready for the slaughter, but Dortmund failed to persevere in the first half. This cost coach Edin Terzic's team dearly after the break, because after the hour it was suddenly 2-2. Maximilian Beier cut inside and because Schlotterbeck touched the ball, Meyer had to watch as the ball rolled into the goal.

Things went from bad to worse for Dortmund, who also had to accept the 2-3 score less than five minutes after the equalizer. Anton Stach enjoyed plenty of space in Dortmund's box and simply passed to Beier, who scored from close range and scored his second goal within a few minutes. Beier was relieved by Weghorst ten minutes before the end of regular playing time, who therefore had to settle for a reserve role.

Dortmund had to chase to leave at least a point in the game, but they were very disappointing in terms of attack. In the half hour that Dortmund still had to gain something from the game, the chances remained remarkably few. Niclas Füllkrug was one of the few who could have scored. To the disappointment of the home crowd, the goaltender shot wide.

In minute 93, Emre Can should have given his team a point. Julian Brandt brought a free kick into the box with great feeling, where Can, incomprehensibly from Hoffenheim's point of view, was able to head it completely uncovered. However, it was without consequences for Dortmund, as Can put his effort over Baumann's goal. With that, the last danger for Hoffenheim had passed. The defeat offers a lot of hope for PSV, which will soon travel to Dortmund for the return in the eighth finals of the Champions League. In Eindhoven it recently became 1-1.
