Mark van Bommel may be able to continue his coaching career in the Bundesliga. According to the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung is the clubless trainer in the picture at Schalke 04. Van Bommel, who was fired from PSV last season, is reportedly one of the candidates. Manuel Baum and Dimitrios Grammozis are also in the picture to get started in Gelsenkirchen.

Schalke 04 is working on a dramatic series. The Bundesliga club has not won a game since January 17. In the second half of the previous year, Schalke dropped hard in the rankings. This season too, the performances are anything but promising. The first league game was lost 8-0 to Bayern Munich, while Werder Bremen was 1-3 too strong last weekend. The club management has now said goodbye to David Wagner and is looking for a new trainer. Van Bommel is one of the candidates to help Schalke on top of it.

Van Bommel is no stranger to the Bundesliga. The former midfielder played for Bayern Munich between 2006 and 2011. After he ended his football career in 2013, he dived into the coaching profession. He assisted Bert van Marwijk with Saudi Arabia and Australia, among others. At PSV he stood on his own two feet as head coach for the first time. At the end of last year, he was fired in Eindhoven due to disappointing results and since then the 43-year-old trainer has been without a club.

According to WAZ Van Bommel will face competition from Baum and Grammozis. The 41-year-old Baum, former trainer of FC Augsburg, among others, is currently working for the German Football Association as a trainer of Germany Under-18. According to German media, he would be the biggest contender to fill the vacant position at Schalke. According to BILD he was spotted on Saturday in Gelsenkirchen along the line at a game of Schalke Under-23. Other names circulating in the German media are Ralf Rangnick, André Breitenreiter, Valerien Ismael, Marc Wilmots, Sandro Schwarz, and Alexander Zorniger.

If Schalke has not appointed a new trainer on Wednesday, according to Kicker Saturday, an interim trainer on the bench at the match against RB Leipzig. Technical director Jochen Schneider emphasizes that the club takes the time to find a good trainer. “It’s not about attracting a big name for us. We look at what type of trainer this team needs. Quality is more important than speed in making this decision. ”
