Marc Overmars will not be the new sporting director of Newcastle United, it is known The Athletic to report. The English medium reports that the current director of football affairs was the main candidate to become the technical person with ultimate responsibility at the Magpies. However, Overmars has decided to stay with Ajax, or so it sounds.

The Telegraph reported three weeks ago that Overmars was in the picture to turn off Newcastle United’s purchase policy. The new owners of the Premier League club, which recently came into the hands of a wealthy investment fund from Saudi Arabia, have sky-high ambitions and want to enter the transfer market as early as January. Due to his excellent track record at Ajax, Overmars was in the picture to lead that project in the northeast of England.

Valentijn Driessen reported a few days later that Overmars would enter into talks with Newcastle United. “In any case, it will become concrete that there will be talks, in the short term. If we want to have someone in the Netherlands, you only talk to the person you want. But in England it’s something different, they talk to some who are candidates. And Marc is one of them”, said the football chief of The Telegraph in the program football talk. He stated that Overmars was open to a new challenge, while the Daily Mirror wrote that he could earn four times as much at Newcastle United.

However, that challenge does not appear to be Newcastle United. According to The Athletic Was Overmars a leading option to become the new sporting director at the English club, but he has decided to turn that offer down. According to the usually reliable English medium, Ajax was eager to keep Overmars on board and he has now finally decided to stay in Amsterdam for the time being. His contract with Ajax will continue until mid-2024.

Newcastle United must switch in the search for a new sporting director. Luis Campos, sporting director of Lille OSC, and Michael Edwards of Liverpool were also previously named for this vacancy. In any case, Newcastle United have already found a new manager with Eddie Howe. Erik ten Hag was also named as a candidate for the succession of the fired Steve Bruce.
