Manchester United are working hard to extend Kobbie Mainoo's contract. According to Fabrizio Romano, the club has a proposal ready for the midfielder. The first discussions between United and Mainoo and his entourage have already taken place.

Eighteen-year-old Mainoo has made his definitive breakthrough at Manchester United this season. The midfielder has been in the starting lineup in the Premier League in recent weeks and recently stole the show in the crazy final phase against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

After the equalizer in stoppage time the Wolves Mainoo gave Manchester United the victory after a brilliant individual action. It was Mainoo's first goal in the Premier League.

United knows it has top talent on board and is therefore prepared to dig deep into its pockets. Romano writes that Mainoo is seen as a 'crucial part' in the club's future project. A significant salary increase would logically be part of this.

Mainoo is now contracted until mid-2027, with an option for the club to extend the contract for another year. Although there appears to be no rush to extend given the length of his contract, the club wants to make his contract better in line with his role as a starting player.

Mainoo also played an excellent match on Sunday, against West Ham United (3-0 win). The youngster received praise from Manchester United icons Roy Keane and Gary Neville afterwards. Keane stated: “He is an intelligent footballer who can reach the top. He still has a lot to learn, but he really has a good chance.”

Neville was full of praise for manager Erik ten Hag. “I pushed hard for the arrival of Sofyan Amrabat, but Ten Hag did not want an extra midfielder before Mainoo's injury at the start of the season. Ten Hag had confidence in Mainoo from the start. He has both the quality and the temperament to play in these types of matches. He's a star,” Neville concluded.
