Sparta Rotterdam keeper Maduka Okoye will transfer to Watford after this season. The Nigerian goalkeeper thus leaves the Eredivisie for the Premier League. But he may find himself in the Championship next season, as Watford are currently in 17th place battling relegation. Okoye is not afraid that his future club will be relegated.

Watford and Sparta announced almost two weeks ago that an agreement had been reached on the transfer of Okoye. Although both clubs do not make any statements about the amount of the transfer fee, various media reported that it concerns an amount of seven million euros. Never before has Sparta received so much money for a player. “It goes very quickly. Sometimes I have no words to describe this. When I signed my contract, I really believed it,” Okoye said in conversation with the NOS.

Watford will hold Burnley, Newcastle United and Norwich City in the Premier League for the time being. When the club finishes in the last three, Okoye will play in the Championship next season. “I’m not afraid of that. This team has a lot of quality. But of course it is the Premier League, the best competition in the world. I am now a big Watford supporter and hope they stay in the Premier League.” said Okoye.

Before Okoye moves to London, he wants to end the season at Sparta Rotterdam as well as possible. He hopes to maintain himself in the Eredivisie with his current employer. “I want to end it nicely here and I am sure that we will remain in the Eredivisie,” said Okoye. Sparta will play against FC Twente tonight at 6.45 pm.
