Olympique Lyon must play at least one home game without an audience after Sunday night’s disturbances against Olympique Marseille. The Ligue 1 Disciplinary Commission is currently investigating Sunday night’s events, but the Parc Olympique Lyonnais must remain closed pending a ruling. As a result, Peter Bosz’s team will play against Stade Reims on Wednesday 1 December without an audience.

The committee is investigating to what extent the club is guilty of Sunday evening’s incident and expects to make a ruling on Wednesday 8 December. Lyon will play in the Europa League against Rangers on Thursday 9 December and will play the last home game of this calendar year against FC Metz in the competition on Wednesday 22 December. In a statement on its own website, Lyon announced on Monday that it condemns any form of violence.

The match between Lyon and Marseille in the Ligue 1 was suspended on Sunday evening after Dimitri Payet wanted to take a corner in the fourth minute. The captain of Marseille had a full bottle of water thrown at his head and then lay on the grass in pain. Referee Ruddy Buquet decided to stop the game. Less than two hours later, it was decided not to resume the game. The Marseille players refused to continue playing.

Lyon apologizes to Payet in a statement. The person who threw the bottle at Payet’s head was immediately identified thanks to the many cameras hanging in the Groupama stadium. He was removed by the stewards, handed over to the police and taken into custody. It turned out that the man was not a member of a supporters group and was not a season ticket holder.

Lyon wants the criminal and administrative sanctions to have a deterrent effect. The club wants to be able to ban the person involved for life if Ligue 1 and the court give the club the means to do so. Lyon also apologizes to all the spectators who were present at the stadium. They were only able to watch football for a few minutes. “What was supposed to be a party has been spoiled by one person.”

Also the supporters group Bad Gones has distanced itself from the Payet incident. “We strongly condemn the throwing of objects that took place last night,” the group wrote on Twitter. “Particularly what is thrown by an individual against the Olympique Marseille player. This person is not part of our supporters group and is not a season ticket holder. We want to give our full support to the whole of Olympique Lyon. Both to the chairman and the team, but also to our players and staff, as well as to all fans present in the stadium.”
