Louis van Gaal has revealed the reason behind Thomas Müller’s misunderstanding. The Dutch coach tried twice as manager of Manchester United to recruit the Bayern Munich attacker, but had to watch his wife, Lisa Müller, thwart this. Van Gaal tells about the anecdote in the book Bayern Insider from BILD reporter Christian Falk.

Van Gaal worked closely with Müller at Bayern between 2009 and 2011, and wished to bring the shadow striker to England in both 2014 and 2015, when he was at the helm of Manchester United. The English top club had 100 million euros ready and an annual salary of more than 19 million euros, but a transfer never came. The German tabloid newspaper BILD has now revealed the exact reason behind the misunderstanding. According to Van Gaal, Ms Müller was not open to a move to the Premier League.

“That was the reason that Thomas declined the offer of my assistant Marcel Bout, who had all conversations with him,” says Van Gaal in the book. The coach, who would eventually be at the helm of United for two years, stated that the club was also in the race for the German international a year earlier. “In 2014, the Board of Directors of Bayern Munich was persistent,” said the current national coach of the Dutch national team. Since the rejection, Müller has extended his contract at the Allianz Arena twice. The attacker is currently detained in southern Germany until mid-2023.

In addition to his football career, Thomas Müller runs a successful business dealing in horse semen. The couple already had a number of renowned horses in the stable, but expanded their services with the sale of semen. Interested parties can have their horse fertilized during the breeding season by the horses of Müller and his wife, with which the attacker can become a ‘sperm millionaire’ according to the German newspaper. Lisa Müller is a well-known dressage rider who has won several titles in the past.
