Julen Lopetegui is the new manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers, the club confirms via official channels. The 56-year-old Spaniard is the successor of Bruno Lage, who was fired on October 2 due to disappointing performances. Lopetegui was also fired from Sevilla at the beginning of October, but is now allowed to work as the main responsible for the number nineteen of the Premier League.

Lopetegui is therefore going to work in England for the first time. As a trainer, he was previously active at Real Madrid, Porto and as national coach of Spain. He won the Europa League with Sevilla in 2020. However, he had to leave at the beginning of October due to disappointing performances. Since then, the Spanish club has shown little improvement: under the leadership of Jorge Sampaoli, the eighteenth place in La Liga is still a fact.

Lopetegui will join Wolves on November 14. Until the World Cup in Qatar, Steve Davis will remain ultimately responsible at the English club, because of a promise that has been made. Lopetegui previously sold a ‘no’ to Wolverhampton. Still, chairman Jeff Shi is happy with his appointment. “He has been our first choice from the start and we are very much looking forward to working with Julen,” he said on the club’s website.

Lopetegui is the second Spaniard to be appointed manager in the Premier League after Unai Emery this month. Emery has been Steven Gerrard’s successor at Aston Villa for two weeks now. There is a lot of work to be done for both trainers. Wolverhampton Wanderers is in nineteenth place in the Premier League after thirteen games, with only ten points. Villa does only slightly better with twelve points and sixteenth place.
