A remarkable incident occurred during the Bundesliga match VfL Wolfsburg – FC Köln (1-1) on Saturday. Assistant referee Thorben Siewer was hit in the head by a ball and dropped out. A supporter was then taken from the stands and added to the refereeing team to complete the match.

In the fourteenth minute, Siewer had a ball shot to his head from close range by Köln left back Max Finkgrafe, who stopped a Wolfsburg attack. The linesman fell down in great pain and it turned out that the medics could no longer be patched up during the minutes-long interruption that followed.

Fourth official Nicolas Winter therefore stepped in as linesman. To complete the refereeing team again, a very remarkable call came from the stadium speaker in the Volkswagen Arena.

It was asked whether there was a supporter present who could take on the role of fourth official, so that the match could be completed. That call was answered by Tobias Krull, who plays football at the sixth German level for MTV Gifhorn.

This way the match could still be completed. Goals in the first half from Köln striker Faride Alidou and Wolfsburg winger Kevin Paredes made it 1-1. Vaclav Cerny, who played for Ajax and FC Twente in the Netherlands, played 71 minutes for Wolfsburg.
