Barcelona would like to keep Frenkie de Jong, but the Dutchman must then agree to a significant salary reduction. President Joan Laporta announced this last night during a press conference in New York, where Barça will play the last game of the American tour against New York Red Bulls tomorrow.
According to Laporta, Frenkie de Jong would like to stay with the club, but he has to make a sacrifice for that. “We have a new salary structure,” said the chairman. “We found a salary at Barcelona that was 40 percent higher than our competitors, so we are talking to our players. We will do everything we can to make sure Frenkie stays, and I hope he will do everything he can to stay.”
Laporta therefore expects the 25-year-old midfielder to forego a large part of the salary he still owes from the past two seasons. Due to the financial crisis at Barcelona, De Jong agreed at the time that a large part of his salary would only be paid later. In addition, the club wants De Jong to earn less than is stated in his contract, so that purchases such as Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha and Jules Koundé can be registered for LaLiga.

De Jong made the switch to Barcelona in 2019 and has so far made 140 matches and 13 goals for the Catalans.
