Laurent Blanc is no longer coach of Olympique Lyon, various French media reported on Monday. According to, among others L’Équipe and RMC Sports The club management already gave the 57-year-old coach his due on Friday. Blanc was punished for Lyon’s worst ever start to the season. Gennaro Gattuso has already been named as his successor, although Frank Lampard has said The Athletic currently has the best papers.
Lampard served as interim relief at Chelsea for several months last season after the dismissal of Graham Potter. The former midfielder barely managed to turn the tide and guided the London club to a disappointing twelfth place in the Premier League. Lampard previously managed Chelsea, where he was sacked at the start of 2021 after a string of poor results. He also worked as a trainer at Derby County and Everton.
Blanc
Blanc only got one point from the first four league matches, leaving Lyon at the bottom of the Ligue 1 rankings. Moreover, the selector had been at odds with the board for a while. Blanc, who was still contracted until next summer, will be replaced at Lyon for an indefinite period by Jean-François Vulliez. The latter had been assistant coach since July and before that, director of the youth academy for seven years. Vulliez will be assisted by Sonny Anderson (adviser to the president) and Jérémie Bréchet (under 19 coach and former PSV player). There is therefore a chance that Lampard will soon take over at the bottom.
