Kik Pierie reacted immediately after the away match against Roda JC (1-0 defeat) on Friday evening to the bizarre moment with which he killed Young Ajax. After more than an hour of play, the central defender picked up the ball in the penalty area, while the game had never stopped. As a result, Roda received a penalty that was used by striker Dylan Vente. With that, Vente immediately put the final score on the scoreboard.

Pierie puts in front of the cameras of ESPN what went through his mind in the 66th minute. “That ball came from the side and I thought the whistle was blown. I thought: we have to take a free kick. I said to the keeper: I’ll take it. That’s why I take it in my hands. So there was no whistle and I thought so. Just very stupid”, said the central defender afterwards.

At the time, Pierie honestly didn’t realize what referee Clay Ruperti was doing. “At first you don’t even realize it. I wondered why the ref whistled, because I just wanted to take the ball.” Pierie realizes that he has let his team down with this decisive move. “It’s just stupid, that’s all I can say. It happened, there’s nothing I can do about it, I can’t turn it back and it’s a shame it was decisive.”

The entire team of coach John Heitinga also played a pretty lousy match in Kerkrade. The team from Amsterdam did not yet win in the first two games of the new Kitchen Champion Division season and are in twelfth place with only one point. Young Ajax will not return to action until Monday 22 August against the experienced De Graafschap, which is also having a bad start to the competition. The Superboeren from Doetinchem lost the first two matches.
