The contract negotiations between Barcelona and the management of Iliax Moriba have yielded nothing on Wednesday morning, it is known Mundo Deportivo to be revealed several hours later. The club management of the Catalans had hoped that concrete agreements could be made with the eighteen-year-old midfielder, before the selection of coach Ronald Koeman travels to Germany for a training camp. However, the negotiations with the Moriba camp seem to be deadlocked.

“It will be very difficult,” a source close to the Barcelona-Moriba talks told on Wednesday Mundo Deportivo. The young midfielder’s agents have reportedly filed a request with Barcelona that talks resume shortly. The Spanish newspaper also reports that there is still optimism in Barcelona circles about the conclusion of an agreement, but that on the other hand there is also surprise about the difficult course of the negotiations.

Mundo Deportivo was able to report on Monday that Moriba was nominated to travel to Germany with the selection of Koeman. Wednesday morning, however, it became clear that his name is missing from the final list for the training camp there. It is also not expected that Moriba will join his teammates from Barcelona at a later date. Moriba trained with Barcelona-B on Wednesday, although the contract situation makes it impossible for him to participate in exhibition games for the Barcelona reserve team on Thursday and Sunday.

The big stumbling block is apparently the salary Moriba wants for the coming years. Barcelona have a three-year contract on hand for the young midfielder, on more or less the same terms as his current contract. In the eyes of the club management, Moriba then has the opportunity to benefit from Koeman’s full confidence for the next three years. It is believed that Barcelona will be in a better position financially in three years’ time, allowing Moriba’s salary to be reconsidered.

Sporthowever, reported Monday that Moriba’s entourage has dismissed Barcelona’s initial offer. One would consider the offer as meager and also screen with the interest of other clubs. The Spanish newspaper also pointed to next Wednesday as a key moment: if no agreement is reached, Barcelona will bet on a transfer. After all, Moriba still has a contract until mid-2022, making this summer the last moment to earn from him.

ASH wrote that Barcelona is prepared to let Moriba leave for at least thirty million euros. An amount that is much lower than the hundred million euros that is in his current contract as an escape clause. Meanwhile, Chelsea and Manchester City are closely monitoring the situation surrounding the midfielder. At the club of manager Pep Guardiola, he can reportedly look forward to an annual salary of six million euros. Barcelona are currently reportedly paying Moriba €1m a year, though that is the highest amount ever awarded to a youth academy player.
